At the World Wilderness Congress in Anchorage, Alaska in 2005 our Mountain PA Network ran a Concurrent Session: Safeguarding Wildlands In Mountain Protected Areas under the Science and Stewardship track of the conference. Our members contributed images and commentary in a presentation that provided an update of our work to protect mountains and their inhabitants (flora, fauna, human, geological, etc.) around the world. WCPA Chairman Nik Lopoukhine attended the session and the Network Dinner later that night. Presenters included the noted adventure photographer George Schaller.

Projects in 2006 and beyond
Looking forward, we will convene three workshops (one each in 2006, 2007, and 2008) on major mountain protected area issues. Arising from each workshop will be an IUCN WCPA publication to serve as a capacity building tool for mountain protected area managers around the world.

The goal of the workshops is to formulate very practical guidance, information, and ideas for mountain managers and stakeholders. These workshops will be small in scale (about 40 participants) and will build on existing IUCN information on mountain protected area management. They will be a valuable investment in the future protection of mountain areas of the world.

Sponsorship and support for the workshops will be necessary, so opportunities exist for organizations and groups to participate in valuable ways. More detailed information is listed in the IUCN WCPA Mountains Workshop Programme 2005-2008.

We welcome your questions and interest in these events.

Our strong participation at the World Conservation Congress in Bangkok in 2004 included a number of working sessions, book launches and collaborations on resolutions.

Important Science and Stewardship issues and results were shared at our Working Session at the WWC in Alaska.

Jim Johnson of Canada was one of the many Network members who gave us a valuable update of his mountain protection work.

You can obtain information about the images and information shown during our WWC session from the respective Mountain PA Network members.

(Below) Later that evening, Network members shared a delicious Alaskan-style dinner and some "Mountain Quiz" fun provided by the fiendish Larry Hamilton. In a gathering of mountain experts, no one knew the answer to Professor Hamilton's "trick question".
