IUCN
WCPA Mountain Theme Group Workshop 2006
Topic:
Mountain Conservation Connectivity Management
November
14-17th 2006
Papallacta
Hot Springs (Termas de Papallacta) is located 40 miles (65
km) east of Quito at an elevation of 10,800 feet (3,220 m)
on what was the old "Cinnamon Trail". This is the same route
that Francisco de Orellana took in 1542 when he crossed the
Andes in search of gold and discovered the Amazon River. It
is a unique experience traveling across the forest, rivers
and cascades of the Canyon Ranch, one of the main entrances
to the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve and the habitat of
condors, pumas, hummingbirds and spectacled bears.

Location:
Termas de Papallacta,
near Quito, Ecuador, South America

Statement
from Graeme Worboys, Vice Chair Mountains Biome IUCN-WCPA
"With
direct input to the World Wilderness Congress in Alaska, and the
International Mountain Corridors Conference in Spain, the Mountains
team has been very busy in the lead up to 2006. Both of these gatherings
were very successful, and will contribute further to the conservation
of mountains and improved protected area management.
With
IUCN WCPA’s 2005-2008 Strategic Plan focusing on large scale connectivity
conservation in mountain areas, this work will continue during 2006
and beyond. Our Quito Ecuador workshop on connectivity conservation
will generate a practical book on “how to manage” large scale connectivity
conservation”. The book will assist managers, and is planned to
be used for capacity building for connectivity conservation management.
The workshop is to be held from November 14-17th 2006. Further details
can be found below."
Mountain
PA Network member Ms. Shaenandhoa Garcia-Rangel, is a Ph. D. candidate
at the Wildlife Research Group, University of Cambridge (England).
She has created a series of Newsletter updates
(see links below) for the Connectivity Conservation Management
Workshop (CC2006) to held in Ecuador in 2006. One of the outputs from
this conference will be development of a Connectivity Conservation
Management Book ( .doc
format 102k) focused on the "Lessons Learned" by practitioners.
The
workshop's Newsletter is designed to keep conference participants
and other interested individuals updated on the progress underway
for this important event. (Note: you can rotate the pages in these
files by clicking
the "Rotate clockwise" button next to the "Zoom"
